Easy Mocha Coffee Recipe
Making a rich, cafe-style mocha at home is remarkably easy and requires no fancy equipment. A mocha combines the bold, roasted notes of hot espresso with the comforting sweetness of chocolate syrup and silky, steamed milk.
Ingredients
- Coffee: 1–2 shots of fresh espresso (or $1/2\text{ cup}$ of strongly brewed coffee/espresso substitute)
- Chocolate: 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, cocoa powder, or dark chocolate chips
- Milk: $1\text{ cup}$ of whole milk, oat milk, or almond milk
- Optional Top: Whipped cream and cocoa powder for dusting
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare the Chocolate Base: Measure 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup or cocoa powder directly into the bottom of your mug. If using chocolate chips, melt them in the microwave with a splash of milk first.
- Brew the Coffee: Extract 1 to 2 shots of espresso using an espresso machine, Moka pot, or AeroPress. Alternatively, brew $1/2\text{ cup}$ of dark, concentrated drip coffee or instant espresso.
- Combine Coffee and Chocolate: Pour the hot coffee directly over the chocolate in your mug. Whisk or stir vigorously with a spoon until the chocolate completely dissolves into a smooth, glossy syrup base.
- Heat and Froth the Milk: Warm your milk in a saucepan or microwave until steaming (around 150°F / 65°C). Use a handheld frother, French press, or a sealed jar to froth the milk into a creamy micro-foam.
- Pour and Serve: Slowly pour the warm frothed milk over the chocolate-coffee mixture. Top with a spoonful of dense milk foam or a generous swirl of whipped cream, followed by a light dusting of cocoa powder.
This homemade mocha delivers the perfect balance of bittersweet cocoa and robust coffee notes at a fraction of coffee shop prices.
